The BES Foundation
The Burnett and Eugenia Simpson Foundation was established to honor the legacy and continue the tradition of service that embodied the lives of our parents and grandparents, Burnett and Eugenia Simpson.
The family matriarch, Eugenia Simpson (AKA Mama) was born and raised in Ivey district, St. Catherine, while Burnett (AKA Papa) was born and raised in Clapham district, St. Ann. They met in Moneague Market where Papa, a Milner, sold hats, and Mama sold mangoes.
In her youth, Eugenia was brilliant. As she progressed through school, she loved learning and excelled educationally. Unfortunately, Mama was not able to attain her full academic potential due to certain norms of the time. However, although she was not allowed to pursue higher education, with an indomitable spirit and a strong desire for independence and self-sufficiency, Mama created a success path for herself.
First, she went into an apprenticeship with the local dressmaker and quickly learned the skill, becoming a seamstress. Eugenia married Burnett (AKA Papa) who eventually became a tailor.
Beside raising their family of five children, adopted children, and grandchildren, together they created a life of service to the community. It was a team effort. Mama built a thriving dressmaking business and taught the skill to numerous young women.
Additionally, they would prepare meals and distribute them to the sick and shut-ins in the community. They often sewed for free for those who couldn't afford it, especially for school uniforms. They gave of their time, their means, and their talents. They especially served the sick, the poor, and the elderly.
